Welcome to Milk and Orchids: a Nero Wolfe fan community!
I am so pleased that people seem to be interested!
I thought it might be useful to start with a (slightly opinionated) directory of current NW fannish activity. At this time I haven't linked to individual personal websites (I don't like to do so without permission) however, if you have a personal website that contains Nero Wolfe fanfiction and would like to be linked to, I would be happy to include you here.
Please comment with details about anything I have missed.
Fanfiction:
The Milk and Orchids Archive
Lots of great fic. Most of it is slash.
wolfe_office, on the Livejournal Community, has fanfic organized in the Memories section.
Slash, Gen, and Het! Something for everyone.
Yuletide
Links directly to the Nero Wolfe section. We can almost always count on a new Nero Wolfe story at Yuletide!
Discussion: (Somewhat) Active Communities and Mailing Lists:
Milk and Orchids
The Slash friendly list. It tends to be pretty quiet but has occasional flurries of activity.
Nero Wolfe Club
There has been, and probably continues to be, some really good discussion on this list. Many of the members are kind and wickedly intelligent people. But, I confess, I stopped reading it after a discussion in which several members insisted that there is absolutely no racism or misogyny whatsoever in anything Stout ever wrote. Some of the members were also rather hostile towards slash writers, when last the subject was raised. Admittedly, this was several years ago. Somebody should go over there and see if the air has cleared any.
wolfe_office
The aforementioned livejournal community. It welcomes general discussion and has sporadic bursts of activity.
The Black Orchid on LibraryThing
Book discussion! This site is still active. It has lots of Saul fangirls!
General:
The Wolfe Pack
The oldest fanclub going. They organize events and have contests and even put out publications! Their link section has a good list of sites for Stout bibliography, bookcovers, and general fanstuff. I don't really feel the need to replicate that list here, but it is well worth checking out.

Date: 2009-04-16 05:01 pm (UTC)(Okay, I love Rex Stout's writing with a love that is flaming, but to claim there is no racism or sexism in his books is to claim the Hudson's waters are crystal clear. That's the problem with reading fiction from earlier periods: it has to, by nature, reflect the culture from which it arose.
Mind you, Stout did try on the racism and had the odd moment or three of demonstrating that women could be capable. That's one reason I think his books stay readable. But he also deliberately wrote Archie as a mild racist who needed to be curbed - more earlier than later - as well as something of a sexist and Wolfe as a humongous sexist who Had Issues.
I do wonder how anyone could have argued otherwise with a straight face.)

Date: 2009-04-17 12:01 am (UTC)There is a certain type of fan who, as soon as they decide they love something, suddenly will not allow anything critical to be said about it. In this case, I think the logic went something like this:
a) I like the Nero Wolfe books
b) Racism is bad
Conclusion: I don't like racism, but I like the Nero Wolfe books, therefore the Nero Wolfe books cannot possibly have any racist content.
OMG, LOGICAL PROOF!
