I find it interesting how hard he had to work (or, at least, did work) to come up with a situation to explain why his Watson and his Holmes have to live together. In the times he was writing, the sheer eccentricity and grandiosity of a Wolfe is required, it seems, to keep Archie on hand at all times rather than him being an employee who sleeps at his own place. As opposed to original-flavor Holmes and Watson, who could share rooms before and after Watson's marriage without requiring explanations (and long, lonnnnng after the "it was to save money" reason for their original hookup had fallen to the wayside). Oh, Victorian masculinity. ♥
