q: why does rex stout *start* the story seven years in? why not start with wolfe and archie meeting, like how the sherlock holmes stories start with holmes and watson meeting, or how most other mystery series start with "so and so's first case?"
a: because he wants to write about archie being ridiculously in love with wolfe and if he was THIS MUCH in love with wolfe after three days, it would be kind of embarrassing. archie has to have been working for wolfe for SEVEN YEARS to justify the ginormousness of his man-crush!
