I'm like Dorinda, I kind of wonder if Orrie started out as *meant* to be a cool guy, as shown in his first entrance and then later on in the book Stout kind of wrote himself into a corner: "well, SOMEONE needs to menace Maria, and despite the fact that It Must Be Done, whoever does it totally loses audience sympathy, so I guess whoever does it can't be Archie's friend any more." Could be.
