I just rewatched it this morning! I had watched it for the first time years ago, and now had the pleasant surprise of recognizing Lindy Booth (Cassandra from "The Librarians") who looks basically the same in 2015 as she did in 2002.
They did a good job with the dying-word clue, I think it was just ambiguous enough, and very effortful. I think that's a hard task, when moving from page to screen! It's like when a character is disguised as someone else--easy to say on paper, but can be very hard to actually pull off.
*nodding* The only problem, I think, is that when Archie says it at the end he doesn't quite emphasize the difference enough-- it sounds like "shane" to me both times.
The one thing I'd change is Perrit's line reading on the bit Archie refers to as the "voice of a killer".
Personally, I would have switched the actors who played Thumbs Meeker (Lt. Harding Welsh from Due South!!) and Dazy Perrit-- I felt like Meeker was a lot more threatening and they didn't emphasize that enough with Perrit.
My favorite bits from the adaptation: when "Angel Food" is inviting Archie up to her apartment and he's still trying to talk her into being "his loving and obedient daughter" and she's just staring at him like STOP TALKING AND TAKE ME UPSTAIRS AND LET'S DO THIS. And Archie is just like "sexual tension??? what sexual tension?" ^_^
The part where Beaulah cries and tells Archie to go away is less funny in this adaptation, I think (because they don't include any of Narrator Archie's comments) but the part where Wolfe tells Archie to go upstairs and look at his face, and then wash it, is somehow 10x as hilarious. He's just doing it so Archie won't hear the Secret Plans, but also, there's like 15% sincerely honestly being bothered by Archie's dirty face. I don't know why that's so funny. Just the low-key way he says it?? "Yeah, so, a bunch of people have been violently killed, but pls Archie YOUR FACE."
